I don’t encourage anybody to do psychedelics for any purpose whatsoever. I think that people should be free to make up their own minds based on accurate, complete, and honest information. I do acknowledge that for me, personal experiences with psychedelics have been transformative and I wouldn’t consider them medical. Recreational use has been given a bad name, considered hedonistic and extraordinarily dangerous.

I think, for example, the celebratory use of psychedelics at festivals and concerts can be profoundly healing and inspirational. At the same time, MAPS is focused on providing psychedelic harm reduction services because people sometimes take these substances just for recreation and then deeper material rises to the surface. The use of these drugs explicitly for recreation with the intention of only having an easy happy experience is in some ways a recipe for disaster.

A deeper respect for the intention of these drugs should be involved even if the purpose is celebratory and recreational. For non-medical use to be as safe as possible we need to move to some sort of legalized setting so people can know what they’re getting. The distinction between medical and recreational is in some senses artificial. Sasha Shulgin used to say, there should be no such thing as a casual experiment with psychedelics.

Psychedelic Drugs Hold Medical Promise: A Summary

Image

The DEA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintain that there is insufficient research to justify recategorization from Schedule I. This stance creates a catch-22 by basing the decision on the need for more research while limiting the ability of scientists to conduct that research. The June report recommends transferring responsibility for drug scheduling from the DEA to another agency or nongovernmental organization without a history of anti-drug bias, such as the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. No matter how it happens, until the drugs are reclassified, bringing psychedelics from research into clinical practice will be an uphill battle.

A 1914 Trip Report of Psilocybin Mushrooms

This is featured on Psychedelic Frontier.  The following report is from the September 18, 1914 issue of Science magazine, generously contributed to Erowid by archivist Michael Horowitz, as a silvered, heavily-aged copy from old microfiche. This stands out as one of the earliest known experience reports for psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Although the author identifies the mushrooms as Panaeolus papilionaceus, Paul Stamets suggests that Verrill’s identification may have been wrong and the mushrooms might have instead been Panaeolus subbalteatus.

The faces appeared in all sorts of bright and even intense colors–so intense that I could only liken them to flames of fire, in red, purple, green and yellow colors, like fireworks.

Magic Mushrooms Expand the Mind by DAMPENING Brain Activity

Magic Mushrooms Expand the Mind by DAMPENING Brain Activity

Under the influence of mushrooms, overall brain activity drops, particularly in certain regions that are densely connected to sensory areas of the brain. When functioning normally, these connective “hubs” appear to help constrain the way we see, hear and experience the world, grounding us in reality. It seems that a lot of brain activity is used to keep the world very ordinary and very familiar.  They are also the key nodes of a brain network linked to self-consciousness and depression. Psilocybin cuts activity in these nodes and severs their connection to other brain areas, allowing the senses to run free.

Advice for Trippers, New and Old

Before I tripped for the first time, I made sure to do my research on what to expect and what I was dealing with.  Too many times you hear people casually eating mushrooms or tabbin it up, and then having the worst experience of their life because they have no idea what the hell is going on! No homie! You shouldn’t fuck around with psychedelics man…they can make you or break you pretty fast. And if you do it right, it will probably be one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to you. I treasure my experiences shrooming or dropping, and I shake my head at those who take them for granted. So without further ado, here are some basic guidelines for having the time of your life
